I am a very keen squash player and the Oxford City Council wishes to close our local facility. We have fought for nigh on 5 months but it looks as though the centre will be closed on the 1st of January 2008. There is provision for squash (in the North of Oxford) but the facility is already oversubscribed and you have to pay to park, which of course counts towards our outgoings.
It strikes me as strange that in a climate where the government is stating that we should all do more exercise and that recent scientific findings are concluding that those in the west are predisposed to becoming obese that a council should seek to close what is, a "service". All in the view of reducing their expenditure, more than likely, only for the short term.
